Best IRC Client for OS X

Textual is the best IRC client for OS X. I especially love the implementation of OTR in private messages, allowing for secure communication over IRC.

Alright but missing some key features

Overall the app is ok. I am a little disappointed in the reviewers so far as this just seems like a watered down version of adium (which is free). Overall the app looks ok but adium looks just as good and segments text better. Good: - Functioning IRC client - Easy to install and set up Bad: - Watered down IRC client - Boasts of extensibility and “Many community add ons” when in reality there are VERY few - Handles alerts very poorly Overall the alerts functionality was huge for me. I don’t want to be alerted in the same manner for every channel and I should have fine control over that. Overall this app is just ok. I would recommend other free options over this app as they are typically better.

Works very well, and good ZNC support.

I use Textual 5 to connect to a ZNC bouncer, behind which is a Bitlbee IRC/IM gateway. It works great. My laptop can wake/sleep, connect or disconnect, it all "just works" and I never miss anything.

App crashes after update

I got to use this app *one time* after purchasing and before the update. Now it won’t even open. What a piece of garbage.

Best Mac IRC client.

The one and only. Buy it.

Great update, minor issue that causes crash after update is easily fixable

This is a great application and doesn’t deserve the 1 stars for the crash after update. The developer renamed the app and there’s an OS X bug that is Apple’s fault. Just rename your existing app from Textual 5.app to Textual.app or restart OS X and Textual will launch fine. This information is in the release update. Otherwise this is still the best IRC client in the store and does not affect users downloading Textual for the first time.

best Mac IRC experience

Bar none Textual 5 is the best IRC experience on the platform. Yes, IRC isn’t as widely used as it once was, but that’s no reason to deal with the poor non-native feel of other clients. Buy Textual, you deserve the best experience. Great support for ZNC bouncers as well!

Best IRC Application Ever

As an OS X IRC user, it was hard to find something to replace mIRC. However, Textual gave me the feeling of an mIRC experience with a much better looking UI. I’m on several IRC networks and dozens of channels and Textual handles the load without issue. Some users need to understand the recent crash was a result of Apple’s AppStore not renaming the application as per the developers request.

Update doesn’t allow app to open.

Receiving an error every single time I try to open stating that the application closed unexpectedly. Unable to open.

Crashes on launch

Updated to the latest and now it crashes every time I try to launch it. Edit: Apparently renaming the app from Textual 5.app to Textual.app fixes the problem.

Textual just keeps crashing after update

Change the name of the app from "Textual 5" to "Textual" (actually "Textual.app" but most people have the extensions hidden. Thatll fix the crashing problems. ;-)

Textual has been my favorite IRC application for years

It’s simple and it works perfectly for me. Thanks!

Great IRC client with some caveats...

Lots of features, but still feels like a minimal client. Very flexible. Seems to be very stable, too. However, there is one issue which is kind of a massive dealbreaker for me: theres no way to change the font used by the input box. Its permanently set at some hideous variable-width font. Any long-time IRCer will not be able to tolerate that, and it seems like a pretty glaring ommission. :/ Other than that, it seems like a really great app, but... yeah. D:

Great client, still waiting on DCC chat support

This is probably the best IRC client on the App Store, chock full of features. The only thing it is missing is DCC chat support. It is very hard to run an eggdrop bot with this client because of this. Please add the DCC chat support you’ve been promising since 2011! Thanks and keep up the good work.

Works great!

Great interface, great reliability and UX. I tried Adium before this but Textual seems really good for irc. User highlighting and notifications are great.

Saddened

I am troubled with this update. I just spent $5 on an “upgrade”. First off, my old Textual settings were lost. Dozens of channels, servers, and preference settings gone. Why make us pay for an upgrade? This is old school desktop application thought process. The way App Stores work is that upgrades should be free for life. I am a developer, so I understand your thought processes slightly. However, think of work you put into the product as reasons why future customers would purchase your app over an alternative. Your hard work isn’t for nothing. Also, why does this application create a folder in my Applications folder called Textual IRC client? If I move the application out of this folder, the App Store no longer registers the app as being installed. Lastly, I can’t honestly see a huge difference in the UI...

Won’t run in Yosemite anymore

Upgraded to 5.2.3 and now when I try to open Textual I’m immediately greeted by "Textual 5 quit unexpectedly."

Great program, lots of choices, and developer listens to users!

I’ve been using Textual since 4, and the developer constantly updates this program and spends hours on IRC helping users and getting input on new features to add. In fact, I haven’t seen so much activity on any other IRC Client in a very long time. It integrates excently with most bouncers including ZNC which saves a lot of time trying to read scrollback when you’re away from your computer. Thankfully, this IRC client doesn’t try to integrate every feature that could exist within an IRC client into the interface. Its this type of design that I would love to see in an iPhone IRC client, hopefully someday there will be Textual for iOS!

Textual 5 is the best IRC application for OS X currently in the App Store

Textual 5 is an outstanding IRC application and has taken this hardcore IRC user from the past of terminal based IRC applications to the future of a well formed IRC client that allows me the flexability to customize my user interface with CSS and inline media. I’ve never been able to use a GUI client for more than 30 days but I started a few months ago with Textual and haven’t looked back. This new update works great and fixes the bugs I had encountered in the previous verison. The author and support team are responsive, helpful and willing to take the time to walk you through whatever you may find as an issue. There are plenty of third party Styles and Add-On modules for this client and as it grows and develops I am sure more and more authors are going to start writing their own. The one star reviews all seem to focus on an issue caused by an application rename in the App Store that is easily fixed by renaming the app or rebooting your computer. The developer has even put this in the release comments here in the store. More reviewers need to focus on resolving potential issues before reviewing software. The authors continued dedication and quick release cycle prove that this is the one IRC application on and off the Mac App Store that is not a dead or halfway dead project. For this reason alone Textual is superb.

Probably the best minus one bug

Crashes when the backlog becomes too large, which is annoying if you leave it running for weeks like me. Otherwise one of the best IRC clients on OSX, if not the best.
