Textual 6 App Reviews

Texual 5.0 rocks! stop reading and get the upgrade now!

I had only recently begin using Textual a few months ago, so I was initially on the fence on whether it was worth paying for the upgrade so soon in my case. However, I can say to everyone that it was well worth the $5 to get the latest and greatest of what is by far, the best IRC client for OSX. Seriously, just buy it already and support a great developer who seems to be the only IRC client developer for OSX who understands people want a clean, simple interface - which can be extended by the amazing feature set built into the product. Personally, I use it as my goto client for my ZNC daemon on my server; it connects cleanly to my ZNC proxy and works flawlessly. TLDR: It’s 5 dollars, it rocks, just buy it already!

The best keeps getting better

I’ve been using Textual since 4.x - it’s got a simple UI, excellent support, a small memory footprint and lightweight. I’ve used other IRC clients for Mac and this one does exactly what it needs to do.

Wow...how is this possible...it was already perfect...

...is it possible to be MORE perfect? Why yes it is!!! Textual 5...run and get it now!

Best IRC Client

The only thing that would make Textual better is an iOS client to finally put the last nail in Colloquy’s coffin.

Won’t reconnect after waking from sleep

For the regular IRC user, I don’t see anything new here. Having to manually reconnect every time I open my Mac is a huge hassle. Multiple clicks to reconnect, which is also a bug. I looked through all the settings but could not find a way to set this. Too bad there are no refunds in the App Store, because I’m deleting this app.

Very polished

I’ve been struggling with other clients for a while and was happy to discover Textual. It’s nice, clean, simple, and it works. Best - the developer incorporated a feature request I had very quickly - and it works great! Keep it up!

Best IRC Client I know of

I bought the 5 update as well since it’s my IRC client of choice. I’m glad I did - seems much less sluggish to me now on my MacBook Pro Retina (2013). In fact, I’d call it fast now. I especially love the built-in and nice dark themes.

Textual is for you

Textual supports pretty much all the features you would expect of an IRC client, has a good UI, and is stable and works well. I just wish it had a menu bar icon; I prefer keeping my dock hidden. I spent many weeks searching for a good Mac IRC client, and the search ended with Textual. What I would give for an iOS version.

Used previous version, Textual 5 ROCKS!

I have been using Textual 4 and was quite happy with it. I purchased Textual 5 today and am even happier with this new version. The user interface is much better looking and this version seems faster than Textual 4. Overall a great upgrade, well worth the small price. Thank you, developers, keep up the great work!

Lots of functionality

There are a lot of options in this, the one thing I didn’t get from this that I find to be the most important is resizing. It constricts the smallest window size, which for an IRC whose content is just text, seems silly. For the basic user, there is no difference in this client than the free ones, except for the better visual cues. I’m going back to Irssi, even if managing multiple channels can be a pain, at least its resizable.

It’s Ok. Not terrible. Not great.

I’m used to mirc, and I haven’t found anything even close to it on OS X, but this client was an interesting diversion from xchat. Colors need to be changed by themes. The network list is too big, and I could not find a way to reduce the size. If there is a menu option, it wasn’t intuitive and I did not find it after about 20 minutes of poking through the menu. 20 minutes is too long. This client has promise since it enables users to make changes through several popular scripting methods. I’ll play with it some more and see if it can be scripted to do what I want with it. If not, it will probably end up in the trash bin with the $5 that was spent on it.

Great IRC Client

I have used IRC for over 20 years, and was a long-time mIRC user. When I switched from PC to Mac, it was difficult finding a client that was compatible. After trying a couple for a number of years, I decided to download Textual. It is everything that I wanted in an IRC client. Maybe the only thing I would suggest as an improvement would be a way to add a quick alias wihtout having to write a complete AppleScript to do so.

The Best IRC Client

Ive been using IRC almost daily for about nine years, and this is hands down the best IRC client Ive ever used. It has a clean, modern interface that doesnt sacrifice what makes IRC great. The included themes are good, but you can modify them or make your own using css, which is very nice. Everything I want out of an IRC client is there, and more. This got me to switch over after using XChat for years. Definitely try the demo on their website if youre on the fence.

Still great, but recently overly complicated...

I’ve been a big fan of Textual since it was first released on the App Store. I resisted upgrading to Textual 5 for quite a while but recently decided to just pull the trigger. The familiar app definitely looks nicer in Yosemite than previous versions. Unfortunately, the Preferences interface has been overly complicated and is no longer very “Mac-like”. It’s incredibly complicated and finding any relevant options I need has become laborous and non-intuitive. Bring back the OS X standard-style preferences menu, please. This complexity is very windows-like, and if I wanted to have to hunt for options I would just use a terminal window instead of a GUI client.

Not worth it

I have tried the other similar applications (LINGO Lime Colloquy etc) and this is the same if not a little worse. An example of something everyone else managed to make very easy butCodeux hasn’t Ignore buttons. you have to write the commands isntead of right click and choosing ignore. Good luck doing it if the spammer is using strange symbols at the start of their names. Adding friends ot your friend list is also needly difficult as you have to manually open the addressbook then add them instead of adding a simple button. Finally there is no way to see if your buddies are online or went offline unless you do a whois. Save your money and stick to the free version.

Advanced, highly customizable IRC client

Very nice looking IRC client with lots of settings/preferences and customizations. I’m relatively new to IRC and this client makes it very easy to get started. Make sure to right click the server and click Connect - otherwise you’re not connected and nothing will show in the channels. Various themes are available (dark, various colors etc). For dark themes I figured out that you can also switch the server and user panels to dark via preferences -> Interface -> darken colors. I was also able to change my user nickname by right clicking on a server -> Server Properties. One thing I noticed - when I used a VPN the server connection wouldn’t work due to it not being to map by ip address -> it said something about SASL - I’ll figure it out someday. For now I had to turn off the VPN to be able to connect to the IRC server.

Works fantastic simple and easy to use

This is a fantastic simple and easy to use client for IRC. It comes loaded with SASL support and everything is VERY simple to set up. I don’t get any lag when posting messages to channels like I have in other IRC clients. I recommend this program to anyone that wants a simple working IRC client that looks nice and operates smoothly on OS X. Kudos to the developers keep up the great work, this product is definitely worth spending the $5.00 on.

best mac irc client

i’d give it more stars, but i can’t..

Absolutely fantastic

Not just the best IRC client I have ever used, it’s one of the best pieces of software I have ever used on the Mac. Aside from somewhat weak logging features, it has every feature I ever thought I would need in an IRC client and quite a few that I had never thought of. Great work!

Amazing - Best IRC Client - OTR is a great addition!

Amazing App! - Super friendly to use and set up. It does everything I need it to while not wasting any RAM or other resources. Works seamlessly - Couldn’t ask for more! OTR is just the cherry on top! This app is so great if I had a $25 Apple gift card, I’d buy it 6 times!
